Parentheses - An interruption of continuity; an interval.
"This is one of the things I wasn't prepared for — the amount of unfilled time, the long parentheses of nothing" (Margaret Atwood).

“For every period of time when you exist, short or long, there is a temporal part of you that exists only then. And for any temporal parts of any objects whatsoever, there is a larger object made up of just those parts.” - John Locke
"Every time I enunciate 'I', even in my thought, an identity is assumed, and this identity is itself not simple, but a figure of a complex gathering of personal and impersonal histories, texts, discourses, beliefs, cultural assumptions, and ideological interpellations...it is not an artifact but a process." - Richard Dyer

i figured that the more words you know, the wider the range of emotions you can feel. for example, if someone never knew the word 'apprehension' (which means anticipation for a misfortune), s/he would have easily mistaken this emotion for 'dread' (which means to be reluctant to experience). Similarly, if someone never knew the word 'rapture' (which means to be carried away in ecstasy), s/he may have described the feeling as merely 'elation' (which means a state of great joy). it seems to me that our emotional capacity may be related to our range of vocabulary.

so i'm going to learn more words.

lately, i've also noticed some quirky and paradoxical aspects of my personality:
1. there is something feminist in me which causes me to dislike songs by Taylor Swift which consistently give the impression of how a girl's life revolves around a guy she fancies. Instead, my favourite songs are by Pink, Lily Allen and Avril Lavigne. All of which shows how women are actually much better off without guys. Yet, i detest men who are ungentlemanly, who are too petty and proud to let the (physically) weaker sex have a slight advantage in, say, passing through a door.
2. i have this almost obsessive compulsive disorder of having to switch off all lights in my house which are not in use before i'm able to carry on doing anything else (no, its really not the saving gaia campaign). i don't care if this leaves me in pitch darkness with just me, my homework and one small gleam of light. perhaps this is the reason for my existence - to save electricity (though my mom argues that switching it on and off actually uses much more electricity). Yet, i cannot do without airconditioning, though everyone knows how much electricity it consumes in an hour and how fans are so cheap and available. i just cannot think straight or sleep without aircond. its the only requisite for me to live. besides, i sincerely believe that perspiration is human's form of melting. perspire enough and soon you'll be no more than a puddle with 2 gobbly eyeballs. in which case please wobble your way out of my sight, i cannot bear to see you.
3. everytime i eat something (cornflakes, sweets, cornflakes, what else do you think i eat?), i systematically carry out euthanasia on those bits of food. the ugly, deformed or small ones simply have to go first. save the best for the last. i even do that to my money notes. but when it comes to good news and bad news, i always like to hear the good stuff first. this is so that i can take the impact of the bad news later on, and it gives me a temporary sense of well-being (better than nothing, which is the alternative). if i heard the bad news first, i would be clamouring for the good news after that, and the person holding the info can really torment me by withholding it. i must not take the chance.

by the way, i really like christmas songs. there is nothing quite like singing We Wish You a Merry Christmas in the shower after a sucky day.

you could really live without me.
